Steinberg noted that the lyrics were inspired by the message his mother told him as a child. The spirit and message of the piece is to allow your “true colors to shine through” so let your individual spirit shine through the performance.
The piece is accompanied by piano and the vocal textures support some wonderful solo moments, as well as allowing independence between all voice parts.
The introduction should sound seamless and flowing allowing the descant line to float above the texture. It’s important to observe all of the subtle dynamic markings throughout the score to create the nuance that will make the piece emotionally meaningful.
